What the process does

From an idea to a repeatable workflow.

Laser engraving removes, darkens or changes the surface of a compatible material. It is useful for repeatable personalization because one digital design can be positioned on many similar blanks.

The laser source, material coating and exhaust setup decide what is possible. A blue diode, CO₂ laser and fiber laser do not process the same surfaces in the same way, so test the exact blank before promising a result.

The workflow

How the process works

Workflow reviewed 07 Oct 2026

  1. 01

    Choose and identify the blank

Confirm the material and coating with the supplier. Do not process unidentified plastics or materials prohibited by the machine maker.

  2. 02

    Prepare vector or bitmap artwork

Set the final size, simplify small details and create a positioning template when every blank must land in the same place.

  3. 03

    Focus, fixture and test

Secure the part, set focus and run a small test matrix. Material color, grain and coating can change the result.

  4. 04

    Engrave with extraction

Use the enclosure and exhaust specified by the manufacturer, supervise the job and keep the work area clear.

  5. 05

    Clean and finish

Remove residue using a method compatible with the material, then inspect contrast, depth and edge quality before repeating the batch.

Choose the setup

What machines and tools do you need?

01

Diode laser setup

A practical route for wood, leather and many coated blanks. Prefer an enclosed system; an open frame needs a compatible enclosure and extraction plan.

02

CO₂ laser

Relevant when engraving is combined with faster cutting of compatible non-metals or clear acrylic.

03

Fiber laser

The specialist route for direct marking and engraving on many bare metals.

  • Suitable extraction or filtration
  • Focus and positioning method
  • Test matrix and spare blanks
  • Fire-safe supervised workflow

For makers selling online

Make the workflow repeatable before listing the result.

A good product page starts after the first successful sample: test the exact material, record the setup and leave room for inspection and finishing.

  1. 01

Keep a tested setting card for every material and finish you list.

  2. 02

Use a fixture or positioning template before accepting repeat personalization.

  3. 03

Inspect contrast, spelling and finish before packing each batch.
