Choose the process before the machine

Start with the part, material and finish you need. The right machine category usually follows from those three decisions.

Write down the result

Begin with the object you want at the end: its size, material, finish and required detail. “I need a machine” is too broad; “I need to cut repeatable 6 mm plywood signs” gives you a process to investigate.

Match the process

A scanner captures shape. A CNC removes material with a cutting tool. A laser cuts or marks with heat. A hybrid machine trades some specialization for one shared workspace.

  • Capture an existing object: start with 3D scanning.
  • Cut pockets, holes or shaped parts: start with CNC.
  • Engrave or cut sheet material: start with laser.
  • Need several processes occasionally: consider a hybrid, then check every module separately.

Use the difficult sample

Bring the smallest feature, most reflective surface or thickest sheet you expect to handle. A successful test on that sample tells you more than a polished manufacturer demo.
