CAD, CAM, slicers and scan software—without the alphabet soup

Know which software creates the design, prepares the job and controls the machine before you commit to a workflow.

Design and preparation are separate jobs

CAD is where a part or drawing is created. CAM turns suitable geometry into toolpaths for CNC machining. Laser software prepares vector or raster work, while scan software aligns captures and produces a mesh.

The file is not always the finished model

A scanner normally produces points or a mesh, not a clean parametric CAD model. Reverse engineering adds cleanup, surfaces and dimensional checks after capture.

Check the hand-offs

List the software you already use, its export formats and your computer platform. Then verify each hand-off with a real sample file. A machine is a poor fit if the workflow depends on a format or operating system you cannot use.
